Valhalla Productions is proud to be joining with Island City Opera in a double bill of two one-act operas by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov seldom seen in America: Mozart and Salieri and Kashchey the Immortal. These performances will be on Jan. 19, 21, 26, and 28, 2018, with a preview performance of an open dress rehearsal on Jan. 17. Mozart and Salieri will be sung in an original English translation, while Kashchey the Immortal (Kashchey bessmertnïy) will be sung in Russian.

In addition, Island City Opera will be presenting La sonnambula, a rarely peformed bel-canto gem, on March 9, 11, 16, and 18, with a preview on March 7. La sonnambula will be sung in Italian.

The Rimsky-Korsakov double bill will be directed by Michael Shahani (music) with guest conductor Lidiya Yankovskaya, and Richard Bogart and Ellen St. Thomas (staging). La sonnambula will be conducted by Jonathan Khuner and staged by Olivia Stapp and Ellen St. Thomas. All performances will be at the Elks Ballroom in Alameda, Island City Opera’s home.

Season auditions for these two programs will be held at the Elks Lodge, 2255 Santa Clara Avenue, Alameda. Two days of auditions are being held:

  • Sunday, June 25, from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM
  • Saturday, July 1, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM

Auditions for any of the operas can be accommodated either day.  Those wishing to audition for principal roles for the Rimsky-Korsakov operas only are requested to schedule their auditions for June 25 if at all possible. Likewise, those auditioning for principal roles for La sonnambula only should try to schedule for July 1 if possible.

All roles in the Rimsky-Korsakov operas will be double-cast if possible; La sonnambula will be single-cast, with possible covers. A few roles have already been cast, but singers may audition to cover those roles.

Singers are requested to sing a prepared aria or song in each of the languages of the operas for which they wish to be considered.

Copies of the vocal scores of the Rimsky-Korsakov operas (in Russian) can be found here.

To schedule an audition appointment, please fill out and submit the form below. The auditions should only take 10-20 minutes, and there is no fee.  And, an accompanist will be provided.

If it is impossible for you to audition on either of these dates, we can arrange a private hearing at a mutually convenient time and place, but there may be a $25 fee.
